What are these hanging mechanisms called, where do I get them, and what is an average price?
My fiancee and I own four guitars [2 electric, 2 accoustic] and a mandolin. We recently placed a dining room table in the room in which they have been stored on metal collapsing stands, and we wish to add 2-4 chairs for the table, but even with the table alone, a lot of free space has been lost.

My main concern is the risk of the chair meeting one of these instruments, and I do not want to have a chance at that sort of damage, so I would like to see about mounting our instruments to the wall.

A friend of ours owned 7 guitars, and he had installed a few claw-like hangers into his wall. These were made specifically for the hanging storage of string instruments.

To hang up the instrument, our friend would place the very top of the guitar necks between two claw-like clasps, which closed around the necks of the guitars directly under the heads, or tops of the guitars, where the tuning knobs are located. He would then release the instrument, and from their they hung securely with the support of these claw things. To remove the instruments from the apparatuses, he would simply lift and gently pull the guitars back down.

These didn't seem to be screwed or bolted into the wall, it seemed to have a suction function to them, because when he moved away, he took them with him and the only mark on the walls were white spaces where dust/grime/smoke could not intrude on the spots he mounted these things upon.

Where would I go in search of these things? I don't even know what to call them, or how much money I would need to spend on five of them? Would they be more readily available in a hardware store or a music shop?

I googled "guitar hanger" and found a bunch of them listed from $4 - $30. They all require mounting into the wall, either into a stud or with drywall anchors. Putting a screw directly into a stud is much preferred because you would only need one or two screws and they'd be a lot more stable than using anchors and are easier to patch with a dab of spackle when you leave the place.

I only use EZ anchors when I have to mount something in drywall and can't hit a stud. They are much easier to use than the old winged molly bolts, hold up to 50 lbs. each, only require a medium phillips screwdriver to install, and are available at any hardware store or home center. I've seen them used in art museums, so that's good enough for me.

Take a look in the garage storage aisle of a home center to see if you can find a dual hook that would work for you because if it says art, music, or marine on the package, you're going to pay about twice as much as it would it cost you at a hardware store, so I'd avoid a music shop for the guitar hangers, if possible. These would have a threaded tip that simply screws directly into a stud kind of like a big wood screw and might be a really inexpensive alternative. They have a plastic coating on the hooks that can be covered with gaff tape if they're too ugly, but they'll be very strong and only cost a buck or two.

By the way, the ones you saw weren't attached with suction cups unless your friend had incredibly light (and disposable) instruments and his walls were made of something extremely nonporous. I wouldn't trust a suction cup to hold anything heavier than a guitar pick and that would only be if they were mounted on glass.
